Vitamin A is required by the human body in more than just a way. It not only helps in creation and maintenance of healthy skin and teeth but is also effective in promoting good vision, especially in low-light environments. Also known as Retinol because it produces pigments in retina of the eye, Vitamin A is required to regulate normal functioning of the body.

Sources of Vitamin A:

Some of the popular sources of vitamin A are eggs, meat, milk, cheese, carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, winter squashes, cantaloupe, pink grapefruit, cream, liver, kidney, cod, and halibut fish oil.

Recommended Dose of Vitamin A:

The recommended dose of Vitamin A is 400 mcg/day for infants between the age group of 0-6 months. The recommended dose is 500 mcg/day for children between 7-12 months. For children in the age group of 1-3 years, the dose is 300 mcg/day; 400 mcg/day for children between 4-8 years, and 600 mcg/day for children between 9-13 years.

For males above the age of 14 years, the recommended dose of vitamin A is 900 mcg/day. The dose for females above the age of 14 years is 700 mcg/day.

Side Effects of Vitamin A:

Deficiency of Vitamin A can lead to development of infectious disease and vision problems. On the other hand, overdose of Vitamin A can lead to sickness or birth defects among infants.
