All about Vitamin C

All about Vitamin C
In the world of vitamins and minerals, Vitamin C is often a neglected name even though it is required by the human body to perform basic as well as complex tasks. Let us read about this vitamin to create and develop a clear, complete understanding.

Vitamin C is a vitamin soluble in water and required for normal body growth and development. This vitamin is also needed by the human body for repairing all body tissues. It is also required for forming an important protein (collagen) required for making scar tissue, skin, ligaments, tendons, and blood vessels.

In addition to all these uses, Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant capable of blocking some of the damage caused by free radicals.

Sources of Vitamin C:

Since Vitamin C is water-soluble in water, leftover quantities of this vitamin leave the body in the form of urine. This means that one needs to ensure a continuous supply of this vitamin in his diet.

Some of the sources of Vitamin C are Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, winter squash, papaya, mango, watermelon, red peppers, raspberries, blueberries, cranberries, and pineapples. In addition to these sources, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, turnip greens and other leafy greens, green peppers, citrus fruits and juices, sweet and white potatoes, and cantaloupe are other good sources.

Side Effects of Vitamin C

In the lack of Vitamin C, an individual may experience side effects such as bleeding gums, easy bruising, anemia, possible weight gain, nose bleeding, and reduced wound-healing rate. Vitamin C deficiency can also lead to scurvy in acute cases. When large quantities of this vitamin are consumed, side effects such as diarrhea and stomach upset may happen.

We hope that this information on Vitamin C, an important part of vitamins and minerals, was useful to you in many ways.
